Why does Iceland ProCruises give passengers more time to Husavík than any other Icelandic port of call? Because it’s a pretty special place.
Often called the “whale watching capital” of Iceland, the town’s offshore waters are home to 15 different whale species, as well as dolphins and 30 bird species. Watching the graceful ocean giants in their Arctic habitat is an unforgettable experience.
The hinterland behind the town is filled with natural wonders like Lake Myvatn, the black lava formations of Dimmuborgir and spectacular Godafoss (“Waterfall of the Gods”). Passengers can also slip into the Myvatn Nature Baths with their unique composition of minerals, silicates, and geothermal microorganisms. The warm, soothing water is a treat for body and spirit.
The Husavík region is also blessed with Icelandic history and culture. The well-preserved Laufas Farm (founded in 1850) is now a living museum and that reflects Icelandic living conditions during former times. Constructed from strips of sod and turf, the farm was home to the local priest and his attendants.
And then there’s that whole Eurovision Song Contest movie. Husavík was the hometown of the two main characters (played by Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams) and many of the scenes The Story of Fire Saga were filmed in and around the town. The harbor area and historic structures like Húsavíkurkirkja wooden church were among several local landmarks that “starred” in the film.
Husavík is a port of call on both the “Best of Iceland” and “Iceland Circumnavigation” journeys offered next summer by Iceland ProCruises.
