Sure, it’s super cool to crash in a tent in the middle of the African bush and listen to the sound of lions, hyenas and other creatures doing their wild and untamed after-dark thing.
However, EcoTraining Guides & Guardians offers more upscale options for families, groups and couples attending their wildlife courses and experiences in South Africa — including comfy villas with air conditioning, swimming pools, wifi, and well-stocked bars.
Standard accommodation at Pridelands Bush Camp consists of 10 simple dome tents, each with two mattresses and single pillows (two learners per tent). There are shared bathroom facilities and a central communal area.
Yet there’s also Leopard’s Lair Bush Lodge, which can sleep up to 10 guests in three beautifully furnished luxury suites and one family suite. Separate from the rooms, there’s a large, fully equipped communal kitchen, lounge, deck and braai area with a spectacular pool overlooking the Mohlabetsi riverbed.
Likewise, Selati Bush Camp features 10 simple dome tents, each with two mattresses and single pillows (two learners per tent). There are shared bathroom facilities and a central communal area overlooking the Selati River.
But just up the road is Dunn’s Camp with its six comfy cottages, swimming pool and communal lounge, dining, and kitchen areas in a forest and garden setting beside the Selati River.
“We use Leopard’s Lair and Dunn’s Camp for small groups and families,” says Corne Schalkwyk of EcoTraining. “Ideally 6-10 pax, although we have options for slightly larger groups. These camps are ideal for our custom and tailored trips because we take over the whole camp.”
Schalkwyk says they are also ideal for families with younger kids because the two lodges are fenced, unlike the normal EcoTraining camps that have a range of animals roaming through camp.
