Gozo is the living embodiment of the adage: Good Things Come In Small Packages.
History and outdoor adventures. Awesome food and incredible places to overnight. And did we mention it might be even more gorgeous than the big island?
A 25-minute ferry ride from “mainland” Malta, Gozo is smaller and more rural than the big island. Scholars believe that Gozo was the legendary Calypso island of Homer’s Odyssey, the place where Ulysses was mesmerized for seven years by a seductive sea nymph.
You probably won’t come across a sea nymph nowadays. But Gozo offers plenty of other enchantments, from baroque churches and the colossal 15th-century Citadel to coastal cliffs, caves and rocky swimming holes, bucolic hiking trails, and the red-sand beach at Ramla Bay.
Gozo can be explored as a long day trip from Malta, but there’s also a wide range of accommodation for those who want to spend one or more nights on the island — posh beach resorts, charming old harborside hotels, quaint bed & breakfast homes, modest guest houses and modern boutique hotels.
While fresh-off-the-boat seafood is the island’s main culinary attraction, Gozo also boasts unique dishes like pastizzi cheese pies, zalzett sausage, ħobż sourdough bread, pizza-like ftira flatbread with various toppings, and aljotta fish soup.
