San Martín de los Andes makes a great daytrip from River House Lodge. Located on the base of the Andes at the eastern end of Lácar Lake, the picturesque town was founded in the 1890s as a military outpost and service center for local ranching and logging operations.

The creation of Lanín National Park in the 1930s led to decreased logging and increased tourism as the park’s primary gateway.

You can rent bikes and ride trails in the national park, hop aboard a scenic lake cruise with Naviera Lácar & Nonthue, grab a snack at the Argentine-style food truck park on the Avenida Costanera, or browse for local fashion, arts and crafts, gourmet foods, horse tack, sports equipment and souvenirs along Avenida San Martín before returning to the lodge.

Visitors can learn more about the region’s flora, fauna and geology at the town’s modern Museo de Historia Natural.
