Dr Gladys “Intimate Gorilla Trek”
August 28, 2015 - 2 minutes readAdventure Consults has joined forces with legendary Ugandan conservationist Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka to create a gorilla trekkingexperience that provides unique insights into the animals, their health and other issues that impact on their survival. This new approach to the traditional gorilla safari is only available to Premier Safari’s tour operators and only in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
Perched on Uganda’smountainous southern border, Bwindi is home to more than half the world’s remaining wild mountain gorillas and where Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka goes to work. As Uganda’s equivalent of Dian Fossey, she’s been studying diseases in the creatures for 15 years and figuring out ways to improve their health and well being.
Tracking gorillas is a small fraction of Dr. Gladys’ daily routine. Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH), her nonprofit, reaches out to the people who live in and around Bwindi, educating and ensuring them that healthy gorillas mean a better way of life for them too. CTPH also advocates that instead of hunting gorillas and clearing the forest, keeping them safe generates more local income from tourism.
Cost: Dr. Gladys’ professional fees for two days USD 1,000 / domestic flight USD 450 / accommodation for three nights USD 744 / airstrip transfers USD 150 / $2,344 total cost shared by entire group. Please note these costs are in addition to the normal gorilla permit fee.
Alternative option: Gorilla experience with Dr. Gladys’ researchers: USD 100 per person, per day plus normal gorilla permit fee.
