Loisaba Reaches for the Stars . . . and Permanent Protection

_DSC0407Elewana recently launched its new Star Beds at Loisaba and they are really something special, a bucket list experience for anyone on safari in Kenya.

Designed to maximize nighttime sky gazing, a Star Bed is a handcrafted wooden platform with a partial thatched roof and custom-made “mukokoteni” bed-on-wheels that can be wheeled onto the open deck for a spectacular night beneath the stars or left under the shelter of the roof. They feature complete “four-poster” insect netting and are normally reached by foot, horse, camel or vehicle. Recent upgrades include full proper running water and 24/7 electric power. The two sets now in place create a unique opportunity to travel between them both and Loisaba Lodge as part of a “Star Bed Expedition.”

In other Loisaba news, ownership of the 56,000-acre conservancy — a critical piece in protecting Kenya’s second largest elephant population — was transferred to the Loisaba Community Trust in January of this year. This move prevents the land from being sold off to developers and ensures permanent protection for the reserve. The Nature Conservancy raised funds to secure Loisaba and is now working in partnership with Space for Giants to improve conservation management and increase benefits to surrounding communities. Loisaba sits in a key elephant migratory pathway between Kenya’s northwest Laikipia Plateau and Mt. Kenya to the east. It also provides refuge for Kenya’s only stable lion population and an abundance of other wildlife including Grévy’s zebra, wild dogs, leopard and cheetah.
