Easy Riding Around Iceland
August 16, 2018 - 2 minutes readBefore, during and after your cruise aboard Ocean Diamond with Iceland ProCruises, you can explore Iceland on your own — at your own pace — by renting a motor car or four-wheel-drive vehicle through IPC.
Sure, there are plenty of shore excursions you can join. But sometimes you just want to get away on your own. And given the fact that Iceland doesn’t have trains, subway systems, or public trams, renting a vehicle is the ideal way to explore the countryside.
Iceland has great roads — especially the highway that circumnavigates the island — and it’s easy to navigate. However, you’ll need to rent a 4×4 if you’re planning to explore the rugged central highlands, where many of the roads are unpaved.
Parking is free in most of Iceland, but there are places in Reykjavik and Akureyri where you will need to pay. Look for the “P” signs and ticket machines around those cities. As a general rule of thumb, the closer you are to the city center, the higher the parking fees.
Here are the special car-rental deals for 2019 that IPC offers passengers in Isafjördur, Akureyri, Husavik and Reykjavik:
