Catch them when you can — Patagonia’s marine creatures

September 7, 2017 - 1 minute read

Much like the weather, the whales and penguins that frequent the bays, channels and open ocean around Patagonia can vary a lot with the seasons. Australis just posted a new blog that zeros in on the Best Times for Viewing Patagonia Animals. As well as the best places.

For instance, Magellanic Penguins are around from September to May. Among the best locations to see them are Isla Magdalena in the Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, Chilean fjords, Chiloé Island and Peninsula Valdés in Argentina.

Humpback Whales migrate around the bottom end of South America between December and May. And the best place to see those magnificent creatures is Chilean fjords, especially those directly west of Punta Arenas.

Orcas (Killer Whales) are less frequent visitors, found in Chilean waters in December, and off Argentina’s Peninsula Valdés in March and April.

Check out the blog for the lowdown on other marine creatures you can see on Australis cruises or pre/post trips in southern Chile and Argentina.
