Slow Food is a global, grassroots movement that links the pleasure of food with a commitment to community and the environment. As part of our commitment to the movement we have introduced African fusion tapas lunches at Elewana Loisaba Lodo Springs.

With each dish introduced by the chef, lunches are set on the deck looking out over the majestic view of the valley floor or by the pool. The food is fresh, varied and tasty, and uses locally sourced produce.

Slow Food encourages people to eat local, sustainable and healthy food cultivated in ways that are good for the environment while cutting down on imported products and therefore reducing our carbon footprint. Slow Food means living an unhurried life and taking time to enjoy simple pleasures, as well as a way of saying “no” to the rise of fast food and fast life.

The global Slow Food Movement includes The Ark of Taste, an international catalogue of endangered heritage foods. The Ark is designed to preserve at-risk foods that are sustainably produced, unique in taste, and part of a distinct ecoregion.

One example is Ogiek honey, made by one of Kenya’s oldest tribes, people who live in the Mau Forest and other woodlands around Mount Elgon. Another example is vibere or amasoma in Tanzania, a climbing yam that grows above the ground with tubers that grow both on the stem and underground.

The Elewana Collection embraces the Slow Food movement because it echoes what they stand for. The name Elewana derives from the Swahili word for “harmony,” a concept that underpins the company’s philosophy and influences the way they deliver unforgettable safari experiences. Elewana continually strive to leave as little impact as possible on the surrounding environment, while creating a positive impact on local communities.
