From live drama and comedy on open-air stages to sculptures like Venus de Milo in the Louvre Museum and the incredible Elgin Marbles that once decorated the Parthenon, Greece has always been a superstar when it comes to creativity.

But now the Mediterranean nation is taking its artistic flair a step further with a new campaign called “Creative Tourism” to will help regions develop and offer new interactive experiences that revolve around unique aspects of local culture.

Developed by the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO), the activities will help tourists participate in a range of traditional activities linked to the destinations where they are already vacationing.

Among the many possibilities are silversmithing in Ioannina, silk production in Soufli., pyrography in the Peloponnese, or wine and olive oil production at scores of different locations.

“The GNTO strongly believes in the inclusive involvement of local communities in tourism and at the top of our priority list is bridging culture/heritage with tourism and destination development in small cities and rural areas,” said GNTO president Angela Gerekou in announcing the “Creative Tourism” campaign last October.
