Voted one of the Seven Natural Wonders of South America, Iguazú Falls is one the bucket list of nearly every avid globetrotter.
Poised along the Iguazú River on the border between Argentina and Brazil, the incredible cascades are the focus of two Grand Hotels Lux — the Iguazú Grand and Panoramic Grand — which offer unsurpassed luxury in the wilderness within easy reach of the falls.
What makes Iguazú Falls so epic? Check out these five facts:
• The falls have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984 and just the second one declared in Argentina.
• Comprising 275 separate cascades, Iguazú stretches 1.7 miles (2.7 km) across a basalt escarpment — more than twice as wide as Niagara Falls and around 40 percent wider than Victoria Falls.
• While it doesn’t have a greater mean annual flow than Niagara, Iguazú is easily the winner when it comes to highest recorded flow — an amazing 1.6 million cub feet per second achieved after torrential rains in 2014. That’s roughly 26 times more than the normal amount of water tumbling over the falls.
• Large clouds of spray permanently soak the surrounding subtropical forests, creating an extremely humid micro-climate that nourishes more than 2,000 species of vascular plants.
• Iguazú National Park on the Argentine side is home to an incredible array of animals (many of them endangered or threatened) including jaguars, giant anteaters, howler monkeys, ocelots, jaguars, tapirs, caiman crocodiles and harpy eagles.
