Iceland’s Westfjords has been selected as Iceland’s best region to visit in 2022 by Lonely Planet. The global travel experts said the region’s beautiful and untouched nature — and the absence of mass tourism — make it a dream destination.
Lonely Planet’s writers, bloggers and staff members nominated Westfjords to a jury that considered the uniqueness of the region, its “Wow!” factor, and sustainability. The jury was also impressed by how communities work together to promote and protect the region.
Among the region’s highlights are the incredible Dynjandi waterfall, the three museums in Ísafjörður town, geothermal pools, the dramatic Snæfellsnes peninsula and the beautiful town of Stykkishólmur with its well-preserved old houses. And you shouldn’t miss Hornstrandir, a nature reserve and hiker’s paradise known for its tundra, cliffs, glaciers and flower fields.
