Kampala’s Top Restaurants

May 2, 2014 - 3 minutes read

Kampala is fast becoming a city with terrific dining. Corne Schalkwyk, the GM of Premier Safaris, located in Kampala, Uganda Shares his favorite eating spots in his adopted city:

The Crafty Cupcake:
Our favourite must try at Crafty cupcake – B52- the cocktail in a cake! Lashings of Kahlua, Baileys and Grand Marnier, plus of course chocolate and the cake is in there somewhere; not for the fainthearted but utterly decadent!
Plot 5 Hanlon Close Bugolobi, Mukono, Uganda https://www.facebook.com/CraftyCupcakeUganda

The Lawns:
The Lawns blends the urban landscape with décor of country side restaurant, with foods selected all across continent and fused with local ingredients to create fusion delights. Their game meat selection is the best in Kampala. Try the crocodile steak if you’re up for it! Plot 34, Impala Avenue, Off Upper Kololo Terrace, Kololo – 70881 Kampala, Uganda https://www.facebook.com/thelawns.kampala

The Little Donkey:
A real Mexican restaurant in Kampala and a favorite of the US Embassy Staff. It’s probably the best Mexican food you will get in East Africa. Don’t miss their Day of the Dead celebration!

Mediterraneo:
When the Premier Safaris staff craves good Italian food in Kampala, we head to Mediterraneo, but I must confess, I have never had pasta or pizza here. The menu is extensive, and I seem to gravitate to the fish dishes, which are delicious. It’s a very romantic spot, with incredible food. It is the perfect place for a special night out, as it is not cheap. The owners first restaurant, also of the same name, is in Nairobi and is incredibly popular with the UN crowd. Kisozi Close, off Nakaerso Lane, Nakasero Tel: 041 4258448

Yujo Japanese Restaurant:
To comprehend how good and tremendous the quality of the food is at Yujo Japanese Restaurant, you don’t need to look far. Rated as the Number 1 restaurant in Kampala, Yujo has held that spot for a year now. Even a TV crew from TV Tokyo in Japan came to Uganda to shoot a documentary about the food at Yujo. Opened in 2011 and on Plot 4 Kyadondo Road (Nakasero Hill), Yujo prides itself in quality and authenticity of their food and anyone that’s visited the restaurant can attest to that.

Khana Khazana:
Regarded by many as the best Indian in town, classy Khazana is a great place to treat yourself. It features lovely Rajasthani inspired decor, crisp white tablecloths, ultra professional waiters and an attractive water feature. All spices are imported from India, and it does wonderful tandoori dishes and creamy north Indian curries. Acacia Avenue, Kololo Tel: (041) 4233049
