Based at Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge, Shanga is a social enterprise that employs local people — many of them with disabilities — to create unique, high quality, handmade jewelry, glassware and homewares using recycled materials as much as possible.

All profits are reinvested back into the development of new products as well as researching and implementing additional recycling methods. Last year, Shanga generated $680,000 in revenue and eliminated almost 150 tons of landfill waste.

The foundation recently topped the Best Sustainability (Hotels) category at the 2019 Minor Sustainability Awards on the basis of its business and social-environmental impact.

Shanga’s workshop at Arusha Coffee Lodge offers guests and visitors a chance to meet the inspirational staff, inspect their creations and even participate in the creative process.
