You may have heard the saying “Greek summer is a state of mind”. It implies this wonderful feeling associated with the Greek summer that goes beyond the mere passing of warm months and extends to a broader, more profound experience and way of living. The true essence of the Greek summer lies in the feelings, emotions, and connections it brings; it’s about embracing a positive and carefree mindset that can be carried throughout the year, regardless of the actual calendar date.
A friend of mine came a month ago from France to visit me. While chatting on the beach, he asked me what “Greek Summer” means to me in a few words. So, I challenged myself to answer, and here is my answer. Greek summer to me  is to…

Taste Watermelon salad with feta cheese

It  is a delicious and refreshing summer treat. The combination of sweet and juicy watermelon with the salty and creamy feta cheese creates a delightful flavor contrast. Enjoy this salad while watching the sunset over the Aegean sea as a lunch or meal.

Witness stunning sunsets

Experiencing a sunset in Greece is a truly magical and unforgettable event. The country’s diverse landscapes, coastal areas, and beautiful islands provide plenty of opportunities to witness stunning sunsets, when the sun dips below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the white-washed buildings and azure waters. The calming sound of waves crashing against the shore or the gentle breeze adds to the tranquility of the moment.

Sail to discover small islets

I love to charter a boat or join a sailing tour to explore the stunning Islands of Greece. A sailing adventure allows you to visit secluded beaches, discover hidden coves, and enjoy the freedom of the open sea. You can also hop from one stunning island to another to discover its distinct charm, unique architecture, and breathtaking beaches. Tinos, Naxos, Syros, Sikinos, Milos and Andros are some of the must-visit islands that never cease to amaze me each time I visit them.

Enjoy Open-air cinema

In Greece, open-air cinemas are called “therina cinema” which translates to “summer cinema”. It is one of the most popular summer pastimes, where locals enjoy the warm summer nights and the beautiful scenery while watching a movie under the stars. My favorite ones can be found downtown Athens or in Loutraki by the seaside.

Explore an archaeological site

Greece is home to numerous ancient archaeological sites, scattered around each and every corner of the country. Exploring these historic landmarks will transport you back in time and will give you a glimpse of the country’s rich history.

Remember, these are just a few of the many fantastic summer experiences in Greece. Add to that the warm hospitality of the locals that ensure that your Greek summer adventure will be a memorable one.

Happy Summer!
