Read All About It: Bali’s Day of Silence

Bali celebrated the Saka New Year with 24 hours of silence — from 6 a.m. on Saturday March 17 to 6 a.m. Sunday March 18 — as the island’s four million residents stopped routine activities for a day of meditation, fasting and introspection.

Cell-phone companies shut down mobile internet during this period while television and radio stations went silent. Flights to and from Ngurah Rai International airport were cancelled. Shops closed and the usually bustling beaches were patrolled to make sure silence was observed.

Quotable quote: “Let’s rest a day, free from the internet, to feel the calm of the mind,” said Gusti Ngurah Sudiana, head of the Indonesian Hinduism Society before the holiday.
