Read All About It: Endangered Rhinos Despatched to Rwanda

October 2, 2019 - 1 minute read

BBC News (UK) recently ran a story about five zoo-born eastern black rhinos that were released in Rwanda’s vast Akagera National Park after being born and raised in Europe. The three females and two male rhinos — aged between two and nine years old — came from Flamingo Land in Yorkshire (England), the Czech Republic’s Dvur Kralove safari park and Ree Park Safari in Denmark.

Quotable quote: “The animals being released are the descendants of rhinos that – more than 40 years ago – were taken from East Africa and transported to Europe’s zoos for display,” explains Jan Stejskal, head of international programs at Dvur Kralove. “This is the perfect opportunity to take them back to their homeland.”
