Riddle of the Sands

dunes-namibia-2010168-terra_Anyone who has already flown across Namibia with African Profile Safaris knows that sand dunes are one of the more compelling and most colorful subjects for both your eyes and camera. From the Kalahari to the Namib, there is certainly plenty of sand to contemplate. Namibia Tourism recently ran an in-depth and very interesting article on sand dunes. Among the facts they points out:

  • African dust has been recorded as far away as in the Caribbean region on the other side of the Atlantic
  • Dunes are found throughout our solar system – any planet that has an atmosphere and a barren, non-vegetated surface with loose grains can have windstorms that will transport sediment and form dunes.
  • In the main Namib Sand Sea the dune color varies from pale yellowish near the coast to reddish pink in the far interior.
  • When you stand among the dunes it is impossible to gain a complete picture of their form and shape. However, from the air you can fully appreciate the complexity and form of the dunes.

And if you happen to be looking for a great Christmas or holiday gift this year, Namibia and African Profile Safaris are both mentioned in the new National Geographic coffee table book Wild Beautiful Places – Picture Perfect Journeys Around the Globe.
