How to Spot the Snow Leopard

Ladakh’s winters are extreme, but they also offer the best time to spot this elusive creature. November to March is the ideal season to navigate the snowy valleys of the region looking for the beautiful big cat.

Most of Ladakh is situated above 10,000 feet, a factor that can cause dizziness, headaches or even acute mountain sickness (AMS) among those who are not used to the altitude. To prevent these symptoms, acclimatization is a must.

Snow leopard expeditions usually range between 11,000 and 16,000 feet. Hence, it’s imperative that all guests spend at least two days in the city of Leh to acclimatize. During this period, they should spend time resting or go out only on short excursions to the city or surrounding villages. As a border state, Ladakh has a huge Indian military presence and security is always tight. Satellite phones are not permitted and there is no mobile connectivity. However, a satellite phone is available in the village of Rumbak for emergency calls.
