Snow Leopard – The Grey Ghost of the Himalayas

February 8, 2019 - 3 minutes read

The diversity of the Indian subcontinent is reflected in its intriguing mix of wildlife and habitats that segue from tropical evergreen forests and coastal swamps to the arid mountains of the extreme north.

One fascinating species that calls this area home is the magnificent and often evasive snow leopard, which can be spotted in the rugged hills of the upper Himalayas in Ladakh.

Its powerful and agile body make it a great leaper and climber, while thick fur protects the animal from some of the harshest conditions on the planet.

Unfortunately, their population is now on the decline, which makes the Snow Leopard Trek offered by Jungle Sutra by Creative Travel one of the most sought-after experiences in the region today, attracting animal lovers and enthusiasts from across the globe.

How to Spot the Snow Leopard

Ladakh’s winters are extreme, but they also offer the best time to spot this elusive creature. November to March is the ideal season to navigate the snowy valleys of the region looking for the beautiful big cat.

The good news is that Creative Travel’s snow leopard safaris are led by experts who know the area and can take exceptional care of our guests while there. Treks to spot and photograph the animals move at a slow pace, starting early in the morning on forays deep into the Ladakh wilderness. Patience is key to viewing the snow leopard in its natural setting.

More About the Region

Most of Ladakh is situated above 10,000 feet, a factor that can cause dizziness, headaches or even acute mountain sickness (AMS) among those who are not used to the altitude. To prevent these symptoms, acclimatization is a must.

Snow leopard expeditions usually range between 11,000 and 16,000 feet. Hence, it’s imperative that all guests spend at least two days in the city of Leh to acclimatize. During this period, they should spend time resting or go out only on short excursions to the city or surrounding villages. Creative’s tour coordinators carry portable oxygen cylinders and medication to confront the onset of AMS, and they are always at hand to help further.

As a border state, Ladakh has a huge Indian military presence and security is always tight. Satellite phones are not permitted and there is no mobile connectivity. However, a satellite phone is available in the village of Rumbak for emergency calls.
