Sour Grapes? No, They’re Actually Berries

calafate-sour-300x223What are those pinkish-purple cocktails they serve aboard Australis cruises? It’s called the Calafate Sour, a Patagonian take on the Pisco Sours you find throughout Chile and Peru.

There’s actually a long-running debate between Chile and Peru on who invented the Pisco Sour and who makes it better. On the other hand, the Calafate Sour is without doubt a homegrown Patagonian drink. The pinkish-purple color and its distinct flavor derives from the Calafate berry, harvested from a native bush found only in the southern extremes of Chile and Argentina.

If you’ve already downed your fair share on an Australis cruise, here’s a recipe from the Alimag website on how to make it at home:

·        3 cups of Licor de Calafate (which Alimag sells on its website);

·        ½ cup of natural lemon juice;

·        1 cup of ice;

·        1 egg white (optional);

·        3 tablespoons of sugar flower.

Mix everything in shaker or juicer. Stir before serving. Serve preferably in tall glasses. Change quantities according to your taste.
