Wondering where to sleep in Freetown? The Sierra Leone capital offers a variety of accommodation options from basic to boutique. Here are a couple of our favorites:
Located on the Aberdeen waterfront near the northern tip of the peninsula, Toma offers an artistic blend of old and new Sierra Leone. With an extensive mask, sculpture, and art collection, it almost feels like you’re staying in a museum. The open-air restaurant is one of the city’s best. Toma offers its own airport water transfer as well as excursions on the Bunce Island and other spots along the coast.
Sierra Leone’s top beach resort, The Place sprawls along gorgeous Tokeh Beach about a 45-minute drive from the city center. Featuring air conditioning, hot water, comfy beds and plenty of space, the bungalows are all within a short walk of the swimming pool, beach, bar and restaurant (with its Indian cuisine). Guests can arrange a romantic beach bonfire. https://www.stayattheplace.com/
Overlooking Lumley Beach, this modern five-story hotel is ideal for business or pleasure. Oceanfront rooms feature balconies with bird’s-eye-views of Lumley’s busy bar and restaurant scene, as well as gorgeous sunsets. Perched on the roof, Leo’s Restaurant offers tasty Eastern Mediterranean dishes. https://sierrapalms.sl/
The legendary chimpanzee sanctuary lies inside Western Area National Park around 30 minutes from central Freetown. In addition to viewing the rescued and rehabilitated primates, visitors can stay overnight in a cluster of traditional roundhouses and treehouses engulfed by jungle. The eco-lodges are basic — no AC or hot water — but there’s nothing quite like waking up to the sound of more than 100 chimps. https://www.tacugama.com/ecolodges/
